What qualifications do I need to work in finance and accountancy?

Depending on the role you will need certain qualifications to be considered for the job. For example, if you are applying for a job as a Financial Officer you will typically need to have a formal qualification in a degree subject like finance, accounting or business studies. You may also have gained relevant qualifications through undertaking an apprenticeship, completing studies whilst you work. You can also do a college course to get a trainee job at a financial firm. Relevant college courses include:

  • Level 2 certificate in Bookkeeping
  • Level 2 certificate in accounting
  • Level 3 certificate in Financial Studies
  • T level in Accounting

To secure a job as a qualified accountant you will need to have completed an AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) course. The minimum qualification you need to pursue a career in accounting is ACCA Foundations. After completing this you can enrol on the AAT, after which you’ll be awarded a Foundation Certificate in Accounting, an Advanced Diploma in Accounting, and a Professional Diploma in Accounting.

Employers looking for specialist accountants may require that you have ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) or CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) status.

Can I work on a permanent or contract basis?
